What we are about

Beljala Kennels is a small kennel breeding for quality not quantity .

Our mission is to produce happy, healthy Havanese.

Our dogs are first and foremost our pets and live in our home with us. They enjoying playing with our grandchildren and our British Shorthair cat.

We have been involved in the dog world since 1979 successfully showing and breeding Border Collies, Australian Kelpies and Schipperkes before becoming owned by Havanese in 2014.

We have gained many Australian Champion, Australian Grand Champion and Australian Supreme Champion titles with our beautiful dogs and with dogs we have campaigned for others.

Recently (2018) we started breeding Havanese and have been very successful with them in the showring.

Of course, not all puppies are meant for a show career and it is with much joy that these puppies go to loving forever homes and make faithful, dedicated, valued family members.

How we started

It all started when…

Beljala Kennels was founded in 1980 when we started to show and breed Border Collies. We introduced Australian Kelpies to the kennels a year later.

In 1985 we purchased our first Schipperke from Bateauchien Kennels in Victoria. We continued to successfully show and breed these wonderful little dogs until approximately 2004, making up many homebred champions. Along the way our dogs were awarded numerous Best In Group, Runner Up Best In Group, Class In Group, and Class in Show awards. They achieved several Best Of Breeds at Sydney and Brisbane Royal Dog Shows and Best Exhibit In Show and Classes In Show at Schipperke Speciality Shows.

Many puppies were placed in wonderful pet homes and have become valued and much loved members of families.

Our last Schipperke, Sandy, my daughter’s and grandson’s beloved pet, crossed over the rainbow bridge in March 2019.

Due to increasing work demands, we took a hiatus from showing until after Alanna’s retirement at the end of 2013.

Deciding to re-enter the dog world, after researching different dog breeds, we came across the Havanese from a video clip on the Discovery Chanel - Dogs 101.

We recently found this YouTube clip, which has a lot of useful information about the breed too.

Havanese were not a known in Australia when we showed dogs previously, but we became intrigued by these little dogs and thought that the breed would suit us.

We purchased our first Havanese, Ted at the beginning of 2014 and commenced on our whirlwind ride.

As mentioned previously, our dogs are first and foremost our pets but showing is still a big part of our lives.

We started showing Ted’s litter sister, Bliss for her breeder and managed to get her Australian Champion title.
